Bridging Chasms

A little Stormlight Archive: Words of Radiance fancomic of Kaladin and Shallan in the Chasms.

From the moment I picked up the Stormlight Archive, it has always held a special place in my heart. As a person who has struggled with chronic depression for most of my life, Kaladin has always spoken to me as a character. Some of his struggle is my struggle and so we take the journey together.

In 2019 I had a crazy idea: I was going to draw a comic of Kaladin and Shallan trapped in the chasms. For those of you who have read the book, you know this section of Words of Radiance is chapters long and drawing it all out would be a massive undertaking. So I decided to take a more artistic approach rather than showing everything that was written in the book in extreme exactness.

As such, I removed most of the dialogue and focused more on telling the story through visuals. I wanted the focus to be on the emotional weight and journey of these two characters and see if I could do that with as little dialogue as possible. This was the result, a 17 page comic with few words, and fewer panel borders. This is something I’m quite proud of and I hope that you enjoy this little homage to the most epic of fantasy novels of the decade.
